Kvindernes Bygning (The Women’s Building) in Copenhagen, where we recorded a podcast episode with Dorthe Chakravarty, is designed by Ragna Grubb (1903-1961), one of Denmark’s earliest female building architects. Image: Henriette Steiner, 2021.

In March 2021, historian Dorthe Chakravarty asked us to guest her eponymous podcast in celebration of International Women’s Day.
During the interview with Dorthe, we discussed the 20th century architecture and landscapes in Denmark and why it is so important to understand the creative collaborations that brought these to life – collaborations across gender, disciplin and background. We also touched upon Danish architect Anne Marie Rubin, an activist who shared some visionary ideas of housing and alternative forms of living with her friend, jazz musician Josephine Baker in the 1970’s.
The podcast episode is in Danish, you can find it here.

Kvindernes Bygning, The Women’s Building in Copenhagen, with Hotel Cecil and restaurant Karnappen was built in 1935-37 by Ragna Grubb, and later rebuilt. The hotel closed down a few years later but the Women’s Building still stands as seen on the current photo above. Photo: Wikimedia Commons / Copenhagen ca. 1960.

Many thanks to Dorthe Chakravarty for letting us bring light to some of the overlooked creative collaborations in Danish architecture history.
